Former President Bush has promised to help the campaign of Republican Senate nominee Oliver L. North, according to a letter released Saturday by North's headquarters here.
``I would be pleased to endorse you if that would help in any way,'' Bush wrote. ``Good luck to you. It's important that you win the race and that we get control of the Senate.''
The letter was dated Aug. 19. Mark D. Merritt, the deputy campaign manager, said Bush was not expected to campaign in Virginia.
North's campaign was set back last March by a letter former President Reagan wrote to former Sen. Paul Laxalt saying North had made false statements, adding, ``I am getting pretty steamed about the statements coming from Oliver North.''
