ODU FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO NO. 1 UNC, 1-0

Susannah Schott sent a corner past ODU's Kim Decker with less than a minute to play in the first half as the No. 1-ranked North Carolina field hockey team defeated ODU, 1-0, Saturday at Foreman Field.

North Carolina set the tempo in the first 30 seconds, when it quickly drove the ball past the the Old Dominion defense and into the circle.

The eighth-ranked Monarchs survived that threat, as they did repeatedly during the teams' battle, but couldn't score.

The UNC victory - ending an eight-game winless streak against ODU that dated back to Oct. 13, 1990 - was keyed by a centering pass to Schott after two failed corners. North Carolina's Cindy Werley, after two bad passes, got it to Schott perfectly on her third attempt.

``They (the first two passes) came out bouncy,'' Werley said. ``I didn't stay low. The new turf took a while to get used to.''

The Monarchs' defense came out of the box and hesitated, as if anticipating a pass. Schott was left in the clear.

``The defense couldn't do anything about it,'' Werley said. ``It was perfectly centered and perfectly shot.''

The Monarchs managed eight shots on UNC keeper Jana Winthrow, who recorded her fourth straight shutout.

``I thought we had our chances,'' ODU coach Beth Anders said. ``UNC deserved to win. I thought it would be a competitive game. That's what it was. I thought we could be much more competitive than we were. I was disappointed. I miss the fight, I really do. I've missed it for two years.''

ODU senior Sue Callahan must miss the fight, too. Callahan, a Princess Anne graduate, was a sophomore when the Monarchs won their third straight national title. The center back, coming from her traditionally defensive position, took half of the Monarchs' shots.

The Monarchs will attempt to rebound today when they host No. 2 Northwestern at 1 p.m.

``I'm not going to quit,'' Anders said. ``I'm going to fight to the end. They'll be prepared.''

The University of Virginia earned its first ACC victory with a 3-1 decision over Duke. Heidi Waterman, Barbara King and Kristen Daddona each scored for the Cavaliers, who improved to 4-2.

MEN'S SOCCER: Jim Hickling scored a hat trick in fourth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan's 8-1 win over Bridgewater, the Marlins' ODAC opener. The Eagles (0-3) opened the scoring 14 minutes into the game on a Nate Greiner goal. Hickling responded one minute later with a goal assisted by Mike Duffy to even it up. Ryan Crooks netted two and Hickling added another as the Marlins ended the half with a 4-1 lead. Hickling opened the second half with his third score, followed by goals from Duffy, Evan Whitson and Steve O'Mara. The Marlins (5-0-1) host Ferrum at 1 p.m. today.

Billy Owens scored two goals and assisted on another as 11th-ranked William and Mary defeated Virginia Tech, 3-1.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Brigitte Bradley beat two defenders and blasted a shot into the back of the net with 5:39 remaining to seal Virginia Wesleyan's 3-2 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday. The Marlins (4-1) got on the board early when Tatia Boskovich sent Great Bridge graduate Rachael Brantley a cross 2:12 into the game. Bradley sent Marcie Blackbourn a high indirect kick in front of the box for the Marlins' second goal. Erica Reineke netted both goals for the Generals (2-1). Sweet Briar visits Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. today.

Julie Reule paced James Madison with a hat trick as the Dukes rolled over Old Dominion, 9-0, in a CAA matchup. Ashley Williams chipped in two and Heather Selvitelle added another as the Dukes improved to 2-3. The Monarchs are 1-2 in the CAA and 2-3 overall.

CROSS COUNTRY: William and Mary, bolstered by Brian Hyde's first-place time of 25:16 and Marcie Homan's 17:08 first-place finish in the 5K won both the men's and women's team competition at the Cavalier Invitational in Charlottesville. Norfolk State placed 12th; its best effort was Robert Gerrard's 27:40, good for 51st. The Old Dominion women placed eighth. Christine Barr was the Monarchs' top runner, 39th of 20:13. by CNB
