LAW
M. Scott Hart, a partner with the law firm of Mays & Valentine, was appointed the head of the business litigation group in the firm's Norfolk office. Hart has been with Mays & Valentine for the past 18 years, most recently in its Richmond office.
Robert B. Thomas Jr. joined J. Warren Tomlin in the practice of law on Providence Road in Virginia Beach. Thomas is retired from the Navy where he served as military counsel. The firm's name will change to Tomlin and Thomas.
ACCOUNTING
KPMG Peat Marwick in Norfolk elected John Hawryluk and Chris Xystros partners with its accounting firm. Hawryluk and Xystros have been senior managers with KPMG since 1983 and 1984, respectively.
Norvell O. Scott III was elected a principal of the accounting firm of Eason, Lawson & Westphal in Hampton. He currently manages the tax, employee benefits and estate planning departments. Scott holds a law degree and is a member of national, state and local bar associations. He has been with the firm since 1989.
EDUCATION
The English Department at Old Dominion University appointed Scott Cairns director of its creative writing program. Cairns, who has a doctorate degree in English, held the same position with the University of North Texas in Denton.
Janet Peery and Marielle Blais were appointed assistant professors of English. Peery, who holds a masters of fine arts degree, was a visiting assistant professor with the department. Blais was director of the writing center at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
And, Joyce Hoffman was appointed assistant professor of journalism in the department. Hoffman, who holds a doctorate degree in American studies, was a professor of communication arts at Iona College, N.Y.
Visiting assistant professors appointed in the department were: Joseph Cosco, Evelina Galang and Manuela Mourao. Cosco was a reporter with The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star and an adjunct faculty member. Galang, who holds a master's of fine arts degree in creative writing, was a graduate teaching assistant at Colorado State University. Mourao was an adjunct at ODU. She holds a doctorate in comparative literature.
Also, Matilda Cox and James Midyette were appointed annual instructors. Cox has a master's degree in English and was a graduate teaching assistant in the department. Midyette holds a master's degree in English and has been an adjunct faculty member in the department.
John Kelly, Carol Posey and Mary El-Kadi were appointed one-year instructors. Kelly and Posey were adjunct faculty members in the English department. El-Kadi was the assistant director of international programs and director of the study-abroad program at ODU. MEMO: Executive Track reports upper-level executive and management changes.
