Candidate: Sen. Charles Robb
Title: Crusade (30 sec.)
When: Starting Monday, Sept. 19
Text: An announcer speaks over video: ``He's endorsed by the
Virginia Education Association, whose members still call him the
Education Governor. To Sen. Chuck Robb, education has been a
lifelong crusade - a crusade he's brought to the floor of the U.S.
Senate. There he's fought for Head Start, for college loans for
middle class kids, for improved vocational training, and against
school violence.
``As Governor, he built the first electronic classroom. As
senator, he's introduced legislation to connect schools in Virginia
with the most advanced technology and informaton in America.
``Sen. Robb - working hard for Virginia.''
Video: Robb is shown standing in suit and tie in front of a
blackboard with a teacher, then in a montage of classroom shots with
young children. Superimposed on the scenes is text that reinforces
the audio - ``Connect Schools to Information Super Highway,'' for
example.
What's the message: Robb plays to his strength, education - even
if that means he has to reach back nearly a decade to his days as
Virginia's chief executive. Robb is the first to admit that freshman
senators lack the octane to author major initiatives. As governor
from 1982-86, Robb steered $500 million in new state funds into
public schools. The unstated message is a contrast with Oliver
North, who claims that "unionized public schools" are wrecking
children's futures. North also advocates tax breaks for parents who
send their children to private schools or school them at home, a
proposal that Robb says would steal money from public schools.
Factual matters: Robb has been a longtime supporter of public
schools.
