Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer says quarterback Maurice DeShazo is questionable for Thursday's game against West Virginia.
DeShazo suffered a bruised left hip and sprained left ankle when he was hit by a Boston College player while releasing the ball Saturday.
``We're concerned about Maurice,'' Beamer said Monday. ``He didn't practice last night, he's not going to practice today and I'm not sure he's going practice tomorrow.''
Virginia Tech (3-0) will make its first regular-season appearance on national television in four years when it hosts West Virginia (1-3) on ESPN.
The Hokies also learned Monday that ABC has decided to broadcast their Oct. 1 game at Syracuse as one of five regional games at 3:30 p.m. It will be the third consecutive televised game for the Hokies, ranked 14th by The Associated Press and 12th in the USA Today/CNN poll.
Virginia Tech trainer Eddie Ferrell said DeShazo had treatment at 7 a.m. Monday and again in the afternoon.
``It's not one of those real bad things, but it's enough where he can't work,'' Ferrell said. ``He's responded real well the last couple of years to things like that.''
DeShazo has not missed a game in three years as Tech's starter despite a rash of bumps and bruises.
``Hopefully we can get him going here,'' Ferrell said. ``The short week is the problem. If it (the game) were Saturday, he'd be OK. A couple of days would make a big difference.''
Senior kicker Ryan Williams, who missed Saturday's game with a separated left shoulder, will be available to kick Thursday. Atle Larsen is hampered by a groin pull, Beamer said, and the kicker for the West Virginia game will be determined later in the week.
Also, tackle Mike Bianchin broke his right hand Saturday but will be able to play with a cast.
``It may keep him from getting a couple holding calls,'' Beamer said. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
