The defending Beach District regular season and tournament champion Tallwood boys volleyball team improved to 2-0 Monday with a sweep of neighborhood rival Salem, 15-5, 15-10.
But it didn't come easy.
After breezing through the first game, the Lions lost their rhythm in the second and fell behind, 8-3.
``They're not as intense as the team I had last year,'' coach Dave Early said. ``But this team is learning to play together. There was a point there when they weren't.''
Tallwood regained some composure and narrowed the lead to 9-6 before taking control. Then, with the score, 10-9, in favor of Salem, the Sun Devils (1-1) fell apart. Tallwood went up, 13-10, on four unforced errors by Salem. The Sun Devils got back possession on a bad hit by Tallwood's Chuck Beeson, but Tom Hubba's serve was into the net. The Lions finished out the scoring on two out-of-bounds hits by Salem's Pete Blanchford and Justin Shedd. by CNB
