ANGLER SEES PRIZE MONEY BLOWN AWAY

A bit of miscommunication cost a Virginia Beach angler a good sum of prize money and a measure of pride in the Virginia Beach King Mackerel Tournament on Sunday.

David Trax caught fish that would have taken first and second place, but officials told him they didn't count because the tournament had been called off for the day due to a small-craft advisory.

The event paid 40 percent of the $100 entry fees for first place and 20 percent for second, meaning Trax and his crew would have boated 60 percent of the prize money.

Trax - a tournament winner in 1991 and 1992 - said there was no clear ruling on whether anglers could fish if a small-craft advisory was issued by the Coast Guard.

The conflict boils down to what was said at the skipper's meeting on Friday night, when tournament director Kenny Taylor addressed the 20 registered captains and their teammates.

Trax, a former Coast Guardsman, raised the weather issue, aware that an approaching cold front would likely bring blustery winds on Sunday.

``He said that anything short of a hurricane and we could fish,'' Trax said. ``It was my understanding that it would be skipper's choice.''

Evidently, three other teams thought the same thing, opting to fish Sunday.

``I'd say it is a safe bet that if you polled some of the other boats that didn't fish, they did so because it was their own choice,'' Trax said. ``It was never broadcast over the radio that the tournament was called.

``Hey, if I can pay my $100 to fish in his tournament, he can get out of bed and put it on the radio.''

But Taylor insists that there was no need for such an effort.

``All he had to do was push the WX button on his radio and listen to the small-craft advisory,'' Taylor said. ``You can't have a tournament with little boats and expect people to fish when the Coast Guard says you're not supposed to be out there.

``I knew the front was coming through, and at the skipper's meeting I said that if it was blowing a hurricane and there was no small-craft advisory, you can fish. But if there is a small-craft advisory, we would not fish. The advisory went out before `lines in the water' at 6 a.m. He should have been monitoring his radio and he shouldn't have been out there in a small boat anyway.''

William Moger of Norfolk won two divisions - king mackerel and cobia - in the tournament. (Results are listed below.)

Sunday's windy conditions postponed many fishing trips for anglers, but the week prior brought in some outstanding results.

White marlin continued to show well off Virginia Beach, while inshore, speckled trout and flounder fishing continued an upswing, especially in Lynnhaven and Rudee inlets.

Bigeye tuna also a showing off the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where white marlin action continued to be hot.
