SALES GOOD AT NEW ELECTRONICS STORE

Inside the big, peach-colored 1950 Buick parked on the town's main drag is one of Isle of Wight County's newest businesses, Michael's Sound & Electronics.

Well, sort of.

The antique car is actually the focus of an airbrushed mural on the store's outside wall. The car in the picture is a replica of a show car owned by Orion Corp., a stereo manufacturer that services the store, said owner Sidney Michael Newsome.

Newsome, 21, opened Michael's Sound & Electronics in July. The business sells a variety of brand-name car and home electronics, including stereos and security systems, and related entertainment accessories: compact disks, cassettes and children's movies.

The store is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It will stay open until 8:30 p.m. on Fridays to make service more convenient for working customers.

``Business has been real good,'' said Newsome. ``I've sold something every day we have been open.

``So far, every week has been better than the last,'' the Windsor native said. ``I think we are going to do great here.''

Newsome, who is studying electronics at Paul D. Camp Community College, is a 1992 graduate of Isle of Wight Academy. He became interested in car electronics after several years as a teenager working in a Peninsula car audio shop.

Since then, he has worked at a variety of other businesses: The Virginia Diner, Cal-Ray Grocery, a chicken farm. ``I've always learned something from every job,'' Newsome said.

``One reason I decided to open my own business is that I like working with the public,'' he said. ``And car audio and electronics is something I enjoy.''

Newsome has spent the past year planning the opening of Michael's Sound and Electronics. His parents, Rose and Sid Newsome, and several friends helped him lease and move into the downtown Windsor store. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by MICHAEL KESTNER
