SMITHFIELD ART SHOW AND SALE RESUMING

More than 45 artists competing for $3,000 in prizes will converge on downtown for the seventhOlde Towne Smithfield Art Show and Sale this weekend.

Sponsored by The Brush and Palette Club, the art show will be held in the courtyard area behind the Old Courthouse. It is slated to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

This year's show will be the first held in two years, said Carolyn Mason-Taylor, chairman of the planning committee. She said time constraints prevented a show from being held since 1991.

Although most of the artists are from Hampton Roads, some will be coming from as far away as North Carolina and Washington, Mason-Taylor said. A variety of mediums will be represented, including pottery, sculpture and paintings.

According to Mason-Taylor, the $3,000 prize donated by local merchants enables the club to attract quality artists.

``That has allowed us to offer good prizes to our winners,'' she said. ``Artists like coming here because they think Smithfield is such a quaint little town.''

The Brush and Palette Club uses proceeds from the show to fund a $500 scholarship awarded to a senior graduating from an Isle of Wight County high school with plans to study art.

The club also sponsors an art show in the county's school system. It gives monetary prizes to the top three winners from each grades in a countywide school art show.

The Brush and Palette Club meets at Beech Grove United Methodist Church, Driver, at 7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. For membership information, call Mason-Taylor at 357-5346. ILLUSTRATION: Photo by ALLISON T. WILLIAMS
