CHARLES R. SURRAN SR.

Charles Ridd Surran Sr., Capt. U.S.N. Supply Corps (Ret.), passed away after a lengthy illness on Sunday, Sept. 18, 1994, in Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He resided in the 300 block of Botetourt St., Norfolk, and in the 1100 block of South Arlington Ridge Road, Arlington, Va.

He was the son of the late Capt. Charles L. Surran, U.S.N., and the late Rose Ridd Surran of Long Beach, Calif. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirley Hengen Surran, formerly of Piedmont, Calif.; and his son, Charles Ridd Surran Jr. of Norfolk.

Capt. Surran was born Oct. 25, 1923, in Norfolk. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and attended Harvard University, where he was a member of the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1970. He also was a graduate of the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, Calif.

Capt. Surran was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam; and after 30 years of active service with the U.S. Navy, he retired in 1972. After which, he became a real estate broker, property manager and appraiser. Later, he managed the Surran Family investment business.

He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Naval Academy Foundation, Officers Benefit Association, Kentucky Historical Society and the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va.

Services will be held at Fort Meyer Chapel with interment in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Norfolk SPCA, 916 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, Va. 23504. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
