POLICE INVESTIGATING TWO SUNDAY DEATHS IN SUFFOLK

Suffolk police are investigating two deaths that occurred Sunday. No arrests had been made as of Tuesday.

About 8 p.m. Sunday, Vernon Lee Jones, 38, of the 2100 block of Kentucky Avenue, was shot and killed in front of his home during an argument with another man. Police have identified a suspect but believe he has fled the city.

Suffolk police are also investigating the apparent killing of Garland LeRoy Taylor, 24, of the 3500 block of Hansen Ave. in Portsmouth, whose body was found Sunday in a ditch on Barnes Road.

A cause of death has yet to be determined, but police are investigating Taylor's death as a possible homicide. Police said they believe Taylor's body was dumped in the ditch after he was killed.

Taylor was last seen Wednesday, Sept. 14, in the area of Hansen Avenue and the Seven Brothers Convenience Store in Portsmouth.

Anyone with information about either case is asked to call Suffolk Police Department's Crime Line at 539-1222. All information will be kept confidential. ILLUSTRATION: Taylor
