NORFOLK ACADEMY HOLDS OFF RALLY BY N-SA, 59-55

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's bad habit finally caught up with it Tuesday night at Norfolk Academy.

The Saints' girls basketball team has routinely fallen behind in the first half and rallied to win.

Tuesday night, Norfolk Academy wouldn't allow that to happen.

The Bulldogs held off the Saints, 59-55, and dealt N-SA (8-1) its first loss. The Bulldogs improved to 7-0.

The Bulldogs outscored the Saints, 24-3, in the second quarter and went into the locker room with a 26-point cushion, 39-13.

``(Coach Larry Riggs) told us that we weren't putting our hearts into it,'' said N-SA's Jill VanGuilder, who had 18 points. ``He said they were giving 130 percent and we were giving about 30.''

VanGuilder helped the Saints change that as she scored nine third-quarter points and N-SA outscored Norfolk Academy, 19-8, to close the gap to 47-32.

A pair of treys from VanGuilder and four points from Ann Murden kept the Saints rolling in the fourth quarter and suddenly they were only down by seven with 3:22 to play.

Katherine Stewart sank two free throws and a layup to make it 54-51 with 2:24 remaining.

Kendra Robins, who led all scorers with 22 points, nailed a pair of free throws for the Bulldogs, but the Saints answered with two from the line from Lea Wilson and an in-lane jumper from Murden and the gap had dwindled to 56-55 with :45 left.

Kate Rowen hit the front end of a one-and-one for Norfolk Academy, but missed the back end and N-SA had a chance to tie it with less than 20 seconds to play.

But VanGuilder's shot from the top of the key hit the rim and Norfolk Academy's Angie Hucles grabbed the rebound. VanGuilder fouled Hucles, who hit two free throws for the game's final points. ILLUSTRATION: L. TODD SPENCER/Staff
