THE REV. ED SUNDAY-WINTERS was first attracted to Holland Baptist Church because of its dedicated spirit and mature leadership in the face of a challenging situation.
Besides dealing with a sanctuary gutted by fire in December, the congregation also was without a pastor, after the Rev. Charles Bell left. By the time Sunday-Winters joined in April, Holland Baptist had been without a pastor for about half a year.
``I was really impressed with the church and got a sense that it was a good place for me and my family to be,'' he said in a recent interview.
He was also attracted to the rural community on the outskirts of downtown Suffolk. ``It just looked like a wonderful community to live in.''
Sunday-Winters, 30, grew up in east Tennessee. He received degrees from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Following seminary graduation, he served as a campus minister and then as an associate pastor at Fellowship Baptist Church in Garner, N.C.
His wife, Patty, also graduated from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is an ordained minister. She is interim director of the Lutheran Council of Tidewater.
The Sunday-Winters' son, Joshua, is 5 years old. His parents say he enjoys T-ball and other recreational activities as well as his new church and school. by CNB
