A 30-year-old Suffolk man was found dead early Wednesday morning with a gunshot wound to the head near a telephone booth at Effingham and Randolph streets.
Police identified him as Emmett D. Cherry of 607 1/2 Adams St. in Suffolk. Cherry also used the last name of Rascoe, said G.A. Brown, spokesman for the Portsmouth Police Department.
Cherry's body was found face-down when police arrived about 1:35 a.m. at the downtown intersection. Witnesses saw a man in dark clothes running from the area, Brown said.
