Candidate: Oliver L. North
Title: ``Right'' (30 seconds)
When: Started Thursday
Text: Oliver North speaks: ``I'm running for Senate because Washington's out of control and we need to make some changes. We need less government and stronger families. We need term limits, and we need to stop all the liberal spending and save our kids from a future of terrible debt.
``And while I don't have all the answers, I do know what's right with Virginia, and what's wrong with Washington. So if you want to change Bill Clinton's Washington, then I'm your candidate, and I'd appreciate your vote.''
Video: The video cuts between North shaking hands and hugging people at a parade, and the candidate speaking directly into the camera.
What's the message: The spot sets up the familiar contrast between a misguided, distant government and a right-thinking hometown America. The candidate is pictured as a one-man parade who, if sent to Washington, will set it right. His solutions include term limits, an end to liberal spending, a smaller government and stronger families. It also continues North's theme of running against President Clinton instead of the Democratic incumbent, Sen. Charles S. Robb, who isn't even mentioned.
Factual matters: More than 80 percent of federal dollars go to pay for defense, Social Security, Medicare for the elderly, veterans' benefits and other entitlements. North does not specify what of that, if any, constitutes ``liberal'' spending. Nor does he specify what he would cut. Also, he does not explain what he could do to create ``stronger families.''
