FIRE EVACUATES FEDERAL BUILDING

The Federal Building in the 200 block of Granby Street was evacuated Thursday morning after a small fire was ignited in a sixth-story office. There were no injuries.

The fire was reported at 11:12 a.m., according to police spokesman Larry Hill, and was under control by 11:38 a.m.

Hill said sparks from a welder's torch might have started the fire in an office used for storage space.

Although the fire was contained to the office, smoke and water caused damage throughout the building. Damage estimates exceed $100,000, Hill said.

POLICE INVESTIGATING ATTACK ON GIRL: Police are trying to determine whether there are any connections between an attack on a girl as she walked to her school bus stop and similar sexual assaults in May.

A man on Wednesday approached a 14-year-old Hines Middle School student from behind, made sexual comments and pulled her between two houses. The man was scared off when a neighbor, alerted by barking dogs, stepped outside to check on the noise.

Parents expressed fear and outrage after Wednesday's attack and worried that a man who sexually assaulted up to a dozen girls in the same neighborhood three years ago had returned to the streets.

TEEN CHARGED, OTHERS SOUGHT IN ROBBERY: Police have charged a 14-year-old and are seeking two other suspects in connection with an armed robbery involving two couples in Colonial Williamsburg.

A Williamsburg couple and a couple from Sarasota, Fla., were confronted Tuesday night. Three males threatened to kill them, snatched a bracelet from a woman and fled, firing a shot as they ran.

It was the sixth such incident in the restored colonial capital since May. Colonial Williamsburg officials say they are trying to improve security.

Police would not reveal the teen's name because of his age. The teen was charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm and having a concealed weapon, and is being held in juvenile detention, Maj. Mike Yost said. by CNB
