FOOD LION'S PROFITS SOAR

Food Lion said Thursday its third-quarter earnings rose 18 percent as it closed unprofitable stores and began improving supermarkets. The Salisbury, N.C.-based supermarket chain said its profits climbed to $36.6 million, or 8 cents per share, in the quarter ended Sept. 10. That's up from $30.9 million, or 6 cents per share, in the same three-month period last year. Sales rose about 2 percent to $1.85 billion from $1.81 billion, and same-store sales rose 3 percent. by CNB
