Regarding the Sept. 11 religion-page column by Betsy Matthews Wright:
How dare she call the Holy Father and the bishops ``old boys'' afraid of ``empowered women''? Pope John Paul II has raised his voice not against women but in defense of the sanctity of every human life, and the right to full protection under the law of every man, woman and child from conception until natural death. The power over life and death belongs to God alone. Abortion is murder!
Furthermore, sex is not a universal right but belongs to married couples only. While the Catholic Church has always praised large families as a sign of God's blessing and a couple's generosity, the church has also affirmed the right of spouses to regulate fertility responsibly through knowledge and self-control. These last two are certainly more in accord with human dignity than population-control schemes based on principles of animal husbandry.
