SIGNATURE EVENT: HOPEFULS' WRITING ANALYZED

U.S. Senate candidates Charles S. Robb and Oliver L. North crossed paths briefly Friday night at the Virginia State Fair, where both agreed to subject their characters to more scrutiny - at a handwriting analysis booth.

Robb and North wrote their signatures on cards, and a woman fed them into a Televac handwriting-analysis machine. Seconds later, a computerized printout appeared.

Here's what it said for each candidate.

ROBB

You seldom jump to conclusions.

Your happy-go-lucky manner belies the depths of your feeling.

You are an effective leader.

You delight in social gatherings and gala events.

You are keenly competitive and enjoy physical activities.

You do not always have it together; but when you do, look out.

You are impulsive and spontaneous in your actions.

Unfortunately, you sometimes hold a grudge.

Your frank, open nature causes you problems sometimes.

You enjoy showing your affection for loved ones in public.

You are witty and bright and enjoy social activities.

You sometimes tell ``white lies'' to escape uncomfortable situations.

NORTH

Your criticism often hurts.

You enjoy being in the spotlight.

Adventurous and daring, you will take risks to get the things you want.

You are popular and always have many friends.

New scenes and new acquaintances lift your spirits.

You are able to accept what life brings you, and you like change.

Your only ``gear'' is high, and your only direction is forward.

You have the courage to instigate change.

You are impulsive and spontaneous in your actions.

You enjoy showing affection for your loved ones in public.

You act completely independent and cannot be swayed by others.

You may provoke resentment by seeming to have all the answers.
