GRANBY IN DYER TROUBLE AS DEEP CREEK WINS FULLBACK SCORES 3 TDS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WEEK TO LIFT FLAT HORNETS TO 27-13 VICTORY.

Third-ranked Deep Creek, lethargic through most of the first half, found its top form after the break and rolled past Granby, 27-13, Friday night at Chittum Field.

Deon Dyer scored three touchdowns for the second game in a row to lead the Hornets (3-0). The 6-foot, 235-pound junior scored on runs of one, 11, and 55 yards and finished with 93 yards rushing. Last week against Wilson, Dyer had three touchdowns and 92 yards.

The 55-yard scoring run was Granby's back-breaker. A 1-yard scoring run by Granby quarterback Anthony King early in the third quarter had just pulled the Comets (2-2) to within one, 7-6.

But on a third-and-1 play, Dyer popped through the middle, scampered into the end zone and swung the momentum back.

``Miss a tackle, miss an assignment, and it's a big play,'' Granby coach Dave Hudak said.

The Hornets added two more scores before Granby answered with 35 seconds remaining in the game on a 32-yard scoring pass from backup quarterback Roosevelt Westbrook to Desmond Thornton.

King passed for 80 yards and ran for 65 more, but suffered a mild injury in the fourth quarter after a hit by Deep Creek lineman George Miller.

The Granby trainer cleared King to continue, but Hudak said he decided to let Westbrook take over.

The Hornets' crisp second half made up for a flat opening 24 minutes in which Deep Creek fumbled on its first series, gained just one yard in four plays from the Granby 24 on another and needed a goal-line interception by Torrey Wilson with under a minute remaining to escape with a 7-0 halftime lead.

``It was really tough to get our kids up this week,'' Deep Creek coach Jerry Carter said. ``But, you know, you can't play top-notch football every week.''

According to Carter, the Hornets might have been more concerned about playing top-notch football next week. Friday, Deep Creek entertains Churchland, the team which upset the Hornets, 14-13, last season.
