MIDDLESEX RUNNERS STEP ALL OVER WINDSOR, 42-14

Middlesex High won't pass the football unless it is an absolute must. And when Charger coach Bill Garbett turned his two senior running backs loose on Windsor Friday, throwing the ball became the last thing on his mind.

Jermaine Brokenborough and Kenny Acree rushed for a combined 332 yards and scored two touchdowns each to lead Middlesex to a 42-14 non-district victory over the host Dukes in the first game at the new Castle.

Brokenborough racked up 206 yards in 24 carries and scored on runs of 40 and 24 yards. Acree added 126 yards, including TD runs of 51 and 54 yards.

It was the first win in three outings for Middlesex, which is in the Northern Neck District. Windsor, a member of the new five-school Tri-Rivers District, fell to 2-1.

Windsor coach Tommy Austin tried everything, including a goalline stand in the middle of the field to stop the Chargers' ground game.

``We were in a goal-line defense 80 percent of the time and we had people in the right places,'' Austin said. ``And we hit them (Acree and Brokenborough), but we just missed too many tackles.

``On a couple of those long runs, we had them stopped at the line and let them get away.''

Windsor also demonstrated one of the reasons Middlesex hates to throw ball. Dukes' quarterback Jerome Ricks had four passes intercepted, including one in the Charger end zone that would have put the hosts back in the game. by CNB
