PISTOL LEAGUE PREPARING FOR FALL SEASON

The Fall Indoor Pistol League has been reorganized at the Norfolk County Rifle Range with official competition to start Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Eleven teams have entered. They include the NCRR Experts, NCRR Snowbirds, Northwest Marines, Northwest Navy, Fleet Training Center, Fleet Combat Training Center, Rifle Range Marines, Coast Guard Center Coasties, the Chesapeake Sheriff's Department, Mix-N-Match and Hawks Gold.

Fred Vanderslice was elected president. Bob Spainhour will serve as secretary/treasurer. Butch Achterhof is the statistician.

Each team will be assigned a classification based upon the skill level of its four highest classified members. There will be competition for class awards and overall winners.

In past years, the Experts have been the dominant team, pressed by the Snowbirds.

Each shooter in the league will fire once a week, either Tuesday or Wednesday (4:30 to 8 p.m.). There will be a nine-week season.

Some of the teams still have openings for members, Vanderslice said. Those interested in participating can call him at 467-6662.

The rifle range is located at 4321 S. Military Highway in the Bowers Hill section of Chesapeake, near Suffolk.

The league started practicing Sept. 20. Training also is taking place for new shooters in this two weeks of pre-league shooting.

The fall league is NRA-registered and firing counts toward NRA classification for competition. This type of competition is called `Standard American' or `Bull's-eye' and is fired at 25 yards indoors.

THERE WERE 27 competitors in the Norfolk County 400 AGG September hi-power rifle match at Dam Neck.

The Open winner was Joe Yeo of Virginia Beach with a score of 468-2X. Rick Berndt, also from Virginia Beach, won the expert class with 465-10X. Paul Angelicchio of Virginia Beach was first in sharpshooter with 456-6X.

Justin Johnson of West Point was high junior with a score of 458-8X. He was the marksman class winner. Chesapeake's Jonathan Burton was high in the unclassified (new shooters) division with 427-3X. by CNB
