The third annual softball tournament is being held this weekend at Monogram Field and Peanut Park. It was scheduled to start yesterday and continue through today.

Format of the tourney is bracket play, and trophies will be awarded to the first three teams. Two most valuable player awards will be presented also.

Next on the agenda will be the 17th annual 5K run, slated for Saturday, beginning at 5:15 p.m. It will begin and end at the Suffolk Municipal Center, 440 Market St., and wind through residential areas.

Awards will go to the top three finishers in the men's and women's open and the top three in each age group.

The Peanut Fest Lake Drummond bicycle ride will start at 3 p.m., Oct. 2, from the Dismal Swamp Refuge parking lot at Washington Ditch, off Whitemarsh Road. Rich in history, the Washington Ditch Road to Lake Drummond also is scenic with abundant foliage and wildlife.

Registration deadline for the Peanut Fest's golf outing will be Wednesday. The event will be the following Wednesday, Oct. 5, with a shotgun start set for noon at the Suffolk Golf Course.

Entrants should include their handicap and scores from the last three 18-hole games.

Prizes will be awarded for the best six places in low gross and low net as well as the longest drives on the 13th and 15th holes and for the most accurate drives on the fourth and 17th holes. Those closest to the pin on all par 3 holes also will receive prizes.

The Suffolk Jaycees again will sponsor the popular speedball event during the peanut fest Oct. 6-9.

Using a radar gun to clock participants, the Jaycees test how fast an individual can throw a baseball. The event is open to all ages.

Several NASCAR/Winston Cup cars and local race cars will be on exhibit at this year's Peanut Fest. Some of the cars that will be on display include those driven by Rick Mast, Morgan Shepherd, Bill Elliott, Brink Nelms, Ed Allen, Vic Story and Johnny Wolford. by CNB
