CHAVEZ MABRY CAPTURES MEN'S TITLE THIRD TIME

Chavez Mabry has done it again.

The two-time defending champion captured the Suffolk Tennis Association's men's championship a third time by defeating Ken Cussick, 6-2, 6-4, in the finals last week.

Mabry gained the finals with a 6-0, 6-2, victory over Dail Stancil, and Cussick reached the title match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ted Collins. All the matches were played at the Lake Meade Landing tennis complex under the direction of Susie Slack.

Unfortunately there were no entries to have a doubles division or a women's bracket, according to Jan Grover. Awards will be handed out at the STA's banquet Nov. 5.

HOLLAND WINS NET TOURNEY: Melissa Holland of Windsor captured the girls 10-under division of the Neptune Junior tennis tournament by easily beating three Virginia Beach players.

A fifth-grade student at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Holland beat Haley VanderMeer, 6-0, 6-0, and then defeated Whitney Johnson, 6-1, 6-1. The top-seeded player then whipped second seeded Crystal Boas, 6-4, 6-2, in the finals Sunday.

It has been a banner season for the junior member of the Suffolk Tennis Association. Other titles included the Virginia Beach Tennis Patrons Futures, the Suffolk Springs singles, the Commerce Bank Junior Invitational and the Allied Colloids singles.

JUNIOR TEAM LOSES: The Suffolk Tennis Association's junior tennis teams fell in the league's season opener, 4-1.

Only winner for Suffolk was the 12 and under six-player squad (three boys and three girls) that defeated the Great Bridge Swim and Racquet Club, 6-2. This is the same Suffolk team that won the spring league with a 6-0 record.

Other results were: Princess Anne Country Club d. Suffolk 12-under No. 2, 5-1; Greenbrier Country Club d. Suffolk 14-under No. 1, 4-2; Virginia Beach Tennis & Country Club d. Suffolk 14-under No. 2, 8-0, and Great Bridge Swim and Racquet Club d. Suffolk 18-under, 3-1.

The league plays for six weeks on Sunday afternoons and Suffolk has 30 boys and girls playing on five teams. However, three boys 14 and under are needed to give that division more strength.

TWO TEAMS UNDEFEATED: Pioneer Southern, Honker Hill and Emergency M.D.'s have won both of their games and are tied for first in the Level 2 division of the Suffolk Youth Athletic Association's soccer league.

Pioneer Southern blanked Drivers Contractors, 4-0, and shut out Tidewater Blanching, 3-0. Honker Hill beat Johnson's Gardens, 5-2, and defeated Eure Johnson, 2-0. Emergency M.D.'s nipped Tidewater Blanching, 2-1, and trimmed Drivers Contractors, 4-2.

In Level 3 action, Chorey Cavaliers edged Suffolk Monument, 2-1, and won over Nations Bank, 3-1, to take a 2-0 lead in the Level 4 division. Suffolk Monument and Nations Bank are both 1-1 while Open Door Church is winless in two games. by CNB
