Horace William Mitchell Sr., 85, of the 2400 block of Ruffin St., a retired longshoreman, died Sept. 23, 1994, peacefully at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
He was a native of Norfolk, the son of William and Emma Staton-Mitchell and had retired from International Longshoremans Association Local 1248. He was a devoted member of First Calvary Baptist Church and active in all phases of church life. For more than 50 years he served as a deacon. He also taught the men's bible class, was a member of Missionary Group (NU)2 and former chairman of the male usher board. He was a member of the Retired Longshoreman's Association and Huntersville Senior Citizens Circle. He will be missed by his devoted wife of 65 years, Estelle Braxton Mitchell of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Estelle M. Bowers of Temple Hills, Md., and Barbara M. Blount of Fort Washington, Md.; two sons, George B. Mitchell of Washington, D.C., and Van B. Mitchell Sr. of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a devoted niece, Bernice Wilson of Queens, N.Y. He was predeceased by one son, Horace W. Mitchell Jr.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday at First Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnnie L. White, DD. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The family will be at his residence. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
