5-0 ODU SOCCER WIN TAKES METLIFE CLASSIC

Benefiting from a man advantage for most of the game, Old Dominion won its MetLife Soccer Tournament Sunday with a 5-0 win over Robert Morris.

Because William and Mary defeated Air Force, 2-0, in the first game, in order to win the tournament Old Dominion had to defeat the Colonials by at least three goals. The Monarchs (4-2) rose to the challenge, taking a 1-0 lead at 33:34 of the first half on Byron Mitchell's header off a free kick by Milo Iniguez.

Just past the midpoint of the half, ODU's Gene Bowman began a rush down the left sideline towards the goal. Robert Morris' Clint Wisniewski, trailing the play, yanked the back of Bowman's jersey and pulled down the former First Colonial player. Wisniewski was given a red card for the flagrant foul, leaving the Colonials (6-2) a man short for the rest of the game.

The Monarchs, however, took their time cashing in. Play concentrated at midfield until four minutes left in the half, when senior Geof Thompson took a cross from Carlos Vasco and converted a header for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Well aware that they still needed another goal, the Monarchs were all business after the break. Bowman, who had 11 of Old Dominion's 19 shots in the second half, got the clincher less than four minutes in on a header off Raul Ovalle's pass.

Iniguez scored at 36:43 and Jason Shedlock scored his first goal of the year on a rebound of his own shot with 8:09 left.

Earlier, 11th-ranked William and Mary (8-0) got goals from Waughn Hughes and Wade Barrett. by CNB
