BASNIGHT APPOINTS 16 TO COASTAL COMMISSIONS

Senate leader Marc Basnight on Tuesday announced 16 more appointments to new state commissions that will be tackling coastal North Carolina issues in the coming year.

Oysters: Basnight appointed Lawrence Gill of Swan Quarter, Raymond T. Graham of Newport, Joe Huber of Atlantic, Gary Mayo of Scranton and Walter Timm of Jacksonville to an Advisory Council on Oysters.

Earlier this year, the General Assembly appropriated $100,000 for a 19-member advisory council to study the state's oyster industry and develop a plan for enhancing and promoting oyster production.

Fishing licenses: Basnight also appointed seven members to a steering committee to oversee a study of the state's fishing industry during a two-year moratorium on new commercial fishing licenses.

His appointments include Barbara Garity-Blake of Gloucester, Murray Fulcher of Ocracoke, Ford Cross of Beaufort, Melvin Shepard of Sneads Ferry, Sherrill Styron of Oriental, Damon Tatem of Kill Devil Hills and Peter West of Greenville.

This year, the General Assembly froze the sale of commercial fishing licenses, appropriated $225,000 for a study by N.C. Sea Grant of fisheries resources and the state's fisheries management structure. The legislature also established a commission to oversee that study.

First Flight Commission: Basnight also appointed four members of the First Flight Centennial Commission. Appointed were Melvin Daniels of Elizabeth City, Max Fenson of Research Triangle Park, Mark Selph of Raleigh and John A. Watkins of Kill Devil Hills.

The General Assembly appropriated $75,000 earlier this year to create and fund the First Flight Commission to prepare for the centennial celebration in 2003 of the Wright brothers' first flight.

Roanoke Island: On Monday, Basnight named six Manteo residents to a commission that will oversee an expansion of historical and cultural offerings on Roanoke Island.

House Speaker Daniel T. Blue and Gov. James B. Hunt also will make appointments to the commissions. by CNB
