UNDEFEATED SISTERS TAKES THE WORLD SERIES

It doesn't matter where they compete. Sisters players just don't know how to lose.

Earlier this month the Norfolk Parks and Recreation League Softball Champions traveled to Cleveland, Tenn., for the National Softball Association World Series.

Twenty-five teams competed in the world series division, and Sisters went undefeated. The team won six games during the three-day tournament.

Sisters edged out Shipley's Days Inn from Largo, Md., 7-6 in the championship game and beat Shipley's in the semifinals.

Five Sisters players made the All-World team. Shortstop Tina Payne of Norfolk was named the tourney MVP. First baseman Freda Doyle of Norfolk, third baseman Venise Fraser of Norfolk, left-center fielder Trina Clark of Chesapeake and right-center fielder Sharon Taylor of Norfolk joined her on the team.

Head coach Earl Elliott also pointed out several ``unsung heroes'' of the tourney.

Pinch-hitter Agnes Copeland was 4 for 4 with a sacrifice during the tournament and catcher Angela Holloway led the tournament in putouts.

Sisters was 17-1 during the regular season, but only 5-9 during various tournaments.

Elliott blames the poor showing on tight work schedules and the inability to get everyone together.

``The world series was the first tournament where everybody was there, because people were also taking vacations and stuff,'' Elliott said. ILLUSTRATION: File photo
