HAVE RESPECT FOR OFFICE, NOT IDEAS

Jim Wright wrote ``Let's act like we have only one president - show respect'' (Another View, Sept. 16) and Susan Novak later wrote, agreeing with his view. While I agree that the position of president does deserve a certain amount of respect, it does not require that we all agree with everything Mr. Clinton does or says.

I would like to know where these people were when Reagan and Bush were in office. Then it was politically correct to disagree with Reagan. In fact, people said they were just exercising their freedom to disagree and that was how the system works. Now, when someone disagrees with their president, they are told that it is people like them who cause gridlock and prevent Americans from getting what they want (health care, etc.).

I continue to see people complain that it is the Republicans' fault that Clinton's bills are not being passed and we should all get together and stand behind him. Congress is controlled by Mr. Clinton's own party. If these members of Congress agreed with him, it would not matter how the Republicans' voted.

Many people just cannot accept the idea that maybe Mr. Clinton's ideas are not what the American public wants or needs.
