John Fleming Wynne, 89, departed this life on Sept. 27, 1994.
Born in Drewryville, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas Poyner Wynne and Rosa Lee Riddle Wynne.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Boyce Gwaltney Wynne; one daughter, Mary Fleming Wynne Copes; and one son, John Boyce Wynne, all of Smithfield; two sisters, Rosa Lee Claude of Richmond and Edna Watkins of Emporia; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. Playing baseball was his favorite sport while attending Randolph-Macon.
When he first moved to Smithfield, he worked in the Newport News Shipyard for several years before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Upon honorable discharge from the service he became principal of the public high school at Isle of Wight Courthouse. He later worked in the Bank of Smithfield and The Peoples Bank at Mount Jackson, Va., and retired from banking as the vice president of the Bank of Phenix in Charlotte County.
Mr. Wynne was a Mason for 67 years, a member of St. Johns Lodge (NU)144 in Charlotte County. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Hazlewood, the Rev. Bob White and the Rev. Thomas W. Martin. Burial will follow in Bethany Church Cemetery with Masonic rites. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and suggest memorial donations may be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church or a charity of choice.
