BRETT R. BURKHART

Brett Robert Burkhart, 39, beloved son of Dorothy C. Burkhart of Hampton and John R. Burkhart of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died on Friday, Sept. 23, 1994, at his home.

He was a resident of Norfolk for the past 13 years. Mr. Burkhart lived in Hampton for 18 years and graduated from Kecoughtan High School in 1972. He received his B.A. degree from Washington & Lee University in 1976.

During 1977 and 1978, Mr. Burkhart worked at the Chamberlin Hotel on Fort Monroe. He discovered the original blueprints and drawings for the present Chamberlin Hotel, which had been destroyed by fire in 1920. The Chamberlin was celebrating its 50th anniversary at this time and Mr. Burkhart was asked to do an in-depth study of the history of the two Chamberlin Hotels and of the two Hygeia Hotels which had been built on the same site in the latter part of the 19th century on into the 20th century.

It was this work which led to his interest in architecture. He received his master's degree in this field from the University of Virginia in 1981. He and his partner, Robyn Thomas, established the Burkhart-Thomas Architecture Interior Design firm in 1988. Mr. Burkhart was the recipient of the Lazlo Aranyi Award of Merit for his work on the Lynnhaven Lodge in Virginia Beach. He also received three design awards presented by the Norfolk Design Review Committee for his work on Elliot's Restaurant, Loews Shops and the Metropol Market. Additionally, he designed and renovated many residences and commercial buildings in the Tidewater area. Works of note include the theater building and administrative and archives building at the MacArthur Memorial, the Ryan residence, Dumbwaiter Restaurant, Szechaun in Ghent, City Centre and numerous retail shops and restaurants at the Norfolk Waterside Marketplace.

Mr. Burkhart is survived, in addition to his parents, by a brother, Jeffrey P. Burkhart of Nashville, Tenn.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Maj. Britt Johnson at the Unitarian Church of Norfolk on Monday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. The church is located at 739 Yarmouth St., across from the Chrysler Museum. Following the service, the family will receive friends at their home. Twiford Funeral Home, Ghent Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made to the Brett Burkhart Children's Program Fund at the Unitarian Church of Norfolk.
