FIRST VIRGINIA BANKS INC. ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN AND CEO

First Virginia Banks Inc., the Falls Church-based parent of First Virginia Bank of Tidewater, named Barry J. Fitzpatrick to succeed Robert H. Zalokar as chairman and chief executive officer on Jan. 1. Fitzpatrick, an executive vice president and a member of First Virginia's senior management committee, has been responsible for the company's banking and operations-center functions. First Virginia, with assets of $7.2 billion, has 20 bank subsidiaries and five operations centers in Virginia, Maryland and Tennessee. The 54-year-old Fitzpatrick joined First Virginia in 1969 and worked in its Falls Church and Roanoke banks before becoming a senior vice president and regional executive officer of the parent company in 1982. Zalokar, who has been chairman and CEO since 1985, will retire at the end of the year after 39 years with First Virginia. He will remain on the company's board of directors and will be chairman of its executive committee. by CNB
