The Redevelopment and Housing Authority has won a $139,800 federal grant to help fight drugs in public housing, local officials said Wednesday.
The grant from the Housing and Urban Development will fund nightly police patrols and workshops for adults and youth, said John B. Faircloth, chairman of the authority board.
``It's an in-the-trenches type program,'' Faircloth said. ``It's very successful.''
Part of the grant will provide funds for police officers to patrol on foot the city's five public housing complexes each night.
The authority has had a similar program using other grant money, Faircloth said, and housing officials are glad to have funds to continue the patrols.
``We've had police patrolling at certain times, and it's very successful,'' he said. ``We'll utilize the money to continue the program.''
Other funds will be used to provide workshops in personal and career development, job training, youth substance abuse, parent education and drug education.
``The money is very important because it will be used for drug education for our tenants,'' Faircloth said. by CNB
