COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK

SOCCER RESULTS: The boys' select division of the Chesapeake Soccer Club went 4-3 in games played Sept. 18. The U-13 Blast walloped the Elizabeth River Soccer Club Lasers, 8-2, on the strength of James Jackson's five goals. Patrick Bryan chipped in with two goals and Keven Diver scored a goal on a header.

The U-14 Rebels blanked the Norfolk Wolverines on goals by Ben Hawkins, Will Scott and Peter Wasdin, and the U-14 Spirit also notched a victory, 4-2, over Phillips F.C. Jonathan Todd scored twice in the Spirit's win, along with Mike Cosgrove and Taylor Youman.

Also winning games were the U-16 Blast (2-0 over Yorktown on goals by Aaron Bigland and Kevin Weir) and the U-19 Blast (7-4 over Gloucester on four goals by Tommy Carter and scores by Chris Elkin, Kevin Pendleton, and Roger Friedt).

Falling short that day was the U-10 Cyclones, who lost 3-1 to Beach F.C. Bryce Johnson had the lone goal. U-12 Blast fell to Atlantic, 5-0, and the U-15 Renegades were taken apart, 8-0, by the Williamsburg Wizard.

Only one girls' select game was played, with the U-19 team defeating the Richmond Strikers, 5-0.

In boys' advanced division play, there were only two winning teams. The U-9 Shooters beat Great Neck, 5-3, with four goals coming from Bryce Dill. Steven Fleet also scored. The U-14 Hurricanes took a 3-1 win over VBSW, as Eric Hepburn, Ted Brown and Sean Poe scored.

The U-10 Chargers got a goal from Josh Lewis in a 1-1 tie with Great Neck, and the U-14 Untouchables also ended with a 1-1 tie against VBSE on a goal by Jason Damas.

The U-9 Blast lost, 5-4, to Bayside (two goals by Matt Krause and scores by Kevin McCabe and Nick Rice-Sarantis), and both the U-11 and U-12 Blast teams were shut out.

In girls' advanced play, the only loss came to the U-11 Cougars, who fell, 3-0, to Kings Grant. The U-11 Sting pummeled Bayside, 10-0, and two teams scored 4-0 shutouts of Norfolk: the U-12 Flash (goals by Heather Hale, Alyssa Borasky, Amber Mounce, and Casey Antinarella) and the U-13 Tornadoes (goals by Susan Hoppenjans, Katie Barge, Nicole Jackson, and Tory Kelso).

At the Elizabeth River Soccer Club, the U-12 Lightning dropped a close match, 4-3, to the Newport News Aztec Spurs, who scored the game-winner in the final minute of play. Ryan Bumgardner, Tony Michaux, and Aaron Oliver scored for the Lightning.

TCIS SWITCH: The Greenbrier Christian Academy girls basketball team has flip-flopped two games on their schedule. The Gators will now face Rock Christian at home Oct. 15 and hit the road for a game at Norfolk Academy Oct. 29. Tipoff times for both games is still 7:30 p.m.

CHARITY TOURNEY: The 5th annual Knights of Columbus Classic golf tournament to benefit the homeless mothers-to-be of Catholic Charities of Hampton Roads will be held Oct. 7 at the Honey Bee Golf Course in Virginia Beach.
