THE POINT IS THIS: IN AUTO RACING, NOTHING IS SAFE

Jim Adkins found out the hard way how very tenuous a points lead can be.

Adkins had an eight-point advantage over Kevin Harrison before last Saturday's 25-lap Mini-Stock event at Langley Raceway.

Adkins now finds himself 16 points behind as the drivers prepare to close out the 1994 season Saturday night.

Harrison took the lead with 11 laps remaining and never looked back as he cruised to his fifth win of the season. Adkins lost a wheel on lap 17 and finished 15th.

Roger Bress won the Grand Stock championship weeks ago, but an illegal crank shaft denied him his ninth victory of the season last Saturday.

The win was awarded to John Hicks, who now has a 10-point lead over Gordon Weeks Jr.

Charlie Bryant holds a four-point lead over Kevin Adams in the Limited Stock division.

The Late Model Stocks will run a 100-lap feature and Grand Stocks will go 50 on Saturday. The remaining divisions will run their usual 25- and 20-lap races.

AT SOUTHAMPTON: The series points scrambles may be complete for '94, but Southampton Speedway isn't quite ready to close the gates.

The speedway will host its first ever full program of go-kart racing Sunday. The Virginia/North Carolina Championship Kart Shootout gets under way at 4 p.m.

Several exhibition kart events have been held on the 3/8-mile tri-oval, and the lap speeds exceeded 70 mph.

Sunday's slate is scheduled to include racing in eight classes - Senior Champ with wings, Tecumseh Sprints, Stock Lite, Stock Medium, Superstock Heavy, Stock Heavy, Limited Lite and Limited Heavy.

PIGGING OUT: Dixieland Spedway, near Elizabeth City, is celebrating the close of the 1994 racing season with its inaugural Big Bar-B-Q and Bomber Blast on Saturday night.

On the menu are a barbecue cooking contest ($4 per plate, $300 to the winning chef), a 50-lap Bomber race and a country music concert featuring Straight Shooter.

Hobby Stock drivers from Southampton, Pure Stock drivers from Langley, Charger series drivers from Southside Speedway and Bomber drivers from Champion Raceway are eligible to participate in the Bomber event.

Gates open at 5 p.m., and general admission is $8. No coolers will be allowed. by CNB
