Sallie Mae, the nation's leading source for college loans, has announced that a Virginia Beach teacher has won a 1993-94 Sallie Mae First Class Teacher award.
Stacy L. Snyder, a seventh grade math teacher at Bayside Middle school, was one of 51 teachers nationwide to receive the award. Sallie Mae also honored Snyder's former teacher, Dennis Werner, of Shillington, Pa., with a teacher tribute award.
The First Class Teacher Award recognizes the outstanding work by new elementary and secondary education teachers across the United States. The teacher tribute award honors the teachers who most influenced the winning first-year teachers' decisions to pursue a career in education.
Snyder is a 1993 graduate of Syracuse University. Werner was Snyder's health and physical education teacher at Schuylkill Valley High School in Leesport, Pa.
Winners of the first class teachers award receive $1,500, a trip to Washington to visit the teacher's Congressional representative, a tour of the White House, and a dinner reception featuring guest speaker U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley.
