I drive a great deal in our area and have concluded that I am the only person in Hampton Roads who obeys the speed-limit laws.
All of the interstate highways have a 55-mph limit. I drive at that speed, and everyone passes me. One day, I briefly eased up to 65 mph, and everyone still passed me. This is particularly true on the Norfolk-Virginia Beach Expressway. As many of the motorists sped past, I saw such bumper stickers as ``Take a Bite Out of Crime'' or ``Support your Local Police.''
Another hazard is the driving of many people in sports cars. Apparently, they assume it is their God-given right, responsibility and privilege to travel at excessive speed and dart in and out between cars, even at the busiest times of day.
If the cities in this area want to relieve any financial distress they may be having, let them put their entire police force on the interstate highways for a 24-hour period to give citations to speeders. The traffic courts will be jammed, but the deficits will disappear.
