VIRGINIANS SHOULD CHOOSE CAREFULLY

I have nothing personal against Oliver North. I believe he was caught up in an unethical, immoral and illegal action and became a scapegoat for others higher in the chain. However, he was involved, and though acquitted of the charges, lied to a congressional committee.

As a military man, I understand the risks and responsibilities that come with power and authority. It is incumbent upon those in positions of authority to recognize the boundaries of proper legal conduct and actions, ensuring that the boundary is not crossed. If it is, they must face the consequences.

I don't necessarily believe Mr. North intentionally crossed the boundary; but it was crossed, and he as well as others should pay the consequences.

The point Virginians are missing is not whether Mr. North did or did not cross the line, did or did not lie to Congress, has or has not committed his vote on behalf of the interests of others more so than Virginians; but as a candidate for an extremely high elected office having major impact through his judgment, actions and associated vote on the lives of Virginians, his judgment, character, motives and experience are questionable.

Virginians (and I am a native Virginian), as well as the nation, cannot afford and do not deserve an elected official who is questionable. There are too many questionable and down-right verified crooks in Washington now. Let's not take the chance of adding to the problem.

I am not saying that we should elect Mr. Robb. In some people's minds he is ``questionable'' also. I don't excuse his lack of judgment in his personal life; however, I believe his shortcomings vs. Mr. North's are significantly different and must be judged on the impact each would have on the quality of performance on the job as our representative.

Of course there are other choices than these two.

The nation must get better, more-ethical representatives in the seat of power. Virginians have a chance to do this in November. I hope they take it.
