Gov. George Allen has earned the respect and gratitude of the people of Virginia through his efforts to abolish parole in our commonwealth. His plan represents a serious approach to fighting crime, and I implore all members of the General Assembly - Republicans and Democrats - to vote for the plan during the special session.
The governor's plan will require criminals to serve the time to which they are sentenced, restoring the fundamental principal of individual accountability to our commonwealth's criminal-justice system. No longer will violent offenders commit crimes knowing that they will almost certainly secure release in only a few years. As a result, Virginia will create a real system of punishment, deterrence and public safety, and it's about time.
