The special effects for the Oscar-winning movie ``Hunt for Red October'' will be the topic of the opening lecture of this year's Second Tuesday Forum series Oct. 11 at the Commodore Theater.
The speakers will be David and Ellie Merriman of Virginia Beach, who created the special effects with miniatures they will display at the noon lecture.
The Merrimans will use slides and models to demonstrate the techniques used for movies.
The Second Tuesday Forum is sponsored by the Portsmouth Public Library and the 1994-95 series is funded in part by a grant of $1,000 from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy.
It was initiated last year by Louis Brenner, a Portsmouth lawyer and library board chairman.
All lectures are scheduled at noon and are free to the public. Hot and cold beverages will be provided free, and participants are invited to bring their lunch with them.
In addition to the opening presentation on special effects, other programs are scheduled as follows:
Nov. 8: ``History of the Chesapeake Bay'' by College of William and Mary Professor Gerald Johnson, who will discuss the evolution of the Bay and its impact on the human activity, marine life and waterfowl. He also will explore the geological history over many thousands of years.
The presentation will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 515 Court St.
Jan. 10: ``Simon Bolivar'' by Virginia Opera Director Peter Mark, who will discuss the new opera by his wife, Thea Musgrave. The new work will be introduced this season by the Norfolk-based company, and Mark will discuss the makings of a successful operatic production.
The presentation will be held at Zion Baptist Church, 527 Green St.
Feb. 14: ``Claustrophobic Monks without Xerox Machines'' by Craig S. Wansink, assistant professor of biblical studies at Virginia Wesleyan College. Wansink will delve into the life of the Apostle Paul during his imprisonment in Rome and show how his social context influenced his rhetoric and ethical reflection with early Christian communities.
The presentation will be held at Tidewater Community College Visual Arts Center, corner of High and Court streets.
March 14: ``Modern Higher Education and the African-American Youth'' by Harrison Wilson, president of Norfolk State University, who will offer insight into educational endeavors and challenges and project educational expectations for the future.
