WOMAN DIES, COUPLE RESCUED IN CAR CRASH

A 27-year-old Carrollton woman was killed Friday night but a Newport News couple were rescued by passers-by when the car they were in burst into flames after a head-on crash.

The accident happened at 8:15p.m. at the Suffolk city line just before the Crittenden Bridge on U.S. Route 17, where the road narrows from four to two lanes.

The woman, whose name was not being released until relatives could be notified, was heading south when the 1991 Honda she was driving went across the center line and slammed into a northbound 1985 BMW.

State police said the BMW ran up onto a guardrail and burst into flames. Other motorists rushed to the car and pulled the two occupants, Tracey Clemens, 28, and his wife Betty, 38, to safety.

They also pushed the Honda out of the way to keep it from catching fire.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Both were expected to recover.

Police said all three people were wearing seat belts.
