The ``Sunday's heroes'' column in Monday's sports section is a good place to look for players who have bargain-priced football cards. The column is potentially valuable to collectors because it identifies players who have excelled in their profession; it doesn't rely on opinion or market-speculation (factors that have resulted in much misspent ``investment'' money).
Dave Meggett is a recent hero. His appearances on the list are no surprise to Giants fans, who are continually impressed by the creat-ivity and intensity of his performances.
Meggett is no newcomer either. His cards first appeared in the 1989 issues of several companies. Amazingly, though, Meggett's cards have generated only peripheral interest among collectors. His rookie cards usually sell for less than $1 each.
Another recent standout is former University of Virginia star Herman Moore, whose clutch catches helped the Detroit Lions to a Monday night upset of Dallas. Unlike Meggett, Moore was a highly touted rookie who has rookie cards that go for $1.

This year's ``25th Anniversary'' version features raised-design, silver-bordered cards. Each six-card pack sells for $2.50 to $3.
The MNF cards are a source of additional collectibles of some of the games' biggest stars. Famous announcers are also included as subjects of their own cards.
