ADM. MAUZ RETIREMENT CEREMONIES WEDNESDAY

Adm. Henry H. Mauz Jr. will be relieved as commander-in-chief of the Atlantic Fleet by Adm. William J. Flanagan Jr. in ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday aboard the carrier Theodore Roosevelt at Norfolk Naval Station.

U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha, D-Pa., chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, will be guest speaker.

Mauz, whose request for retirement was held up in the Senate by allegations that he mishandled a sexual harassment case, was finally approved Sept. 20 for full retirement at his present rank.

Several female senators alleged that Mauz failed to act properly in handling the case. They dropped their challenges after an investigation determined that Mauz had actually worked aggressively on the matter.

Flanagan was nominated to the command in late April and has been available to replace Mauz since mid-July when he left command of the 2nd Fleet.

During his more than two years as head of the Atlantic Fleet, Mauz oversaw more than 200,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel, 220 ships and submarines and 1,500 aircraft.

Mauz, a native of Lynchburg, began his career at the Naval Academy, where he was graduated in 1959. He is retiring after more than 35 years of service.

He and his wife, Peggy, plan to move to California where their four children live. by CNB
