A Coast Guard helicopter plucked an injured Canadian submarine officer from his boat off the Virginia coast Monday and flew him to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital for treatment.
The Canadian, identified as Lt. C.S. Earl, 26, had a foreign object lodged in his throat when his submarine, the Onondaga, radioed the Coast Guard for help. A H-60 rescue helicopter from Elizabeth City found the submarine about 195 miles southeast of Cape Henry.
Earl was picked up about 6:30 a.m. and arrived at the hospital about three hours later. He was listed in stable condition and was expected to be released.
