MCI WANTS TO GO LOCAL

MCI Metro, a subsidiary of MCI Communications Corp., said it filed applications to provide local telephone service in Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and the state of Washington. Those five states are among the most lenient in allowing competition at the local phone level. Virginia is one of the states with the strictest laws and regulations against competition. Besides providing a new business opportunity, breaking into local phone service could also save MCI billions of dollars in access charges it now pays each year to local phone companies to complete its customers' long-distance calls. by CNB
