More than homemade stews, ham biscuits and pies will be served this weekend at Souper Saturday 1994.
For the first time, coloring books are also being sold at this annual fund-raising event conducted by Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Inc.
The Smithfield Coloring Book is the non-denominational organization's newest money-making project.
Souper Saturday 1994 is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall of Trinity United Methodist Church, 201 Cedar Street. Tickets to the all-you-can-eat luncheon are $5 for adults and $3 for children.
To design the coloring book, artist David Narvaez spent the past three months sketching scenes of people and places in Smithfield. Included in his drawings are The Collage, St. Luke's Church and Windsor Castle.
The Smithfield Coloring Book is the brainstorm of Fred Glanville, a local businessman and founding member of Christian Outreach. Although its debut will be at Souper Saturday 1994, several local businesses will later sell the coloring book with proceeds going to Christian Outreach.
Souper Saturday was started in 1991 when Christ Episcopal Church's missionary committee decided to raise funds for Isle of Wight County's struggling fuel assistance program. The church teamed up with eight other churches in the community to sponsor the first soup luncheon and raised $1,400.
Nowadays, nearly 25 county churches work together to make the soups and sandwiches served at Souper Saturday. The group used the $7,000 cleared in 1993 to sponsor fuel assistance, housing rehabilitation projects and other programs for needy senior citizens and children.
