RUDE SIGNS OF THE TIMES

Into the sea of Republican/fundamentalist political signs swamping my street, I bobbed my two little Democratic ones. Within 24 hours they were gone, not taken from a utility pole or vacant lot, but from my property - a felony I'm told.

This has happened in two prior elections. Am I to think this a merry prank? Am I to laugh?

What truly bothers me is my thought that this must now represent the thinking in the Virginia Republican Party whose candidate blandly asserts that to lie is perfectly permissible if the lying is for the ``right reasons.'' The lines of action which could be sponsored by that ethic, or lack of it, are truly mind-boggling.

I fear for any democracy where diversity of opinion is neither respected nor defended.

I fear for this newspaper, whose present editorial policy is directed by a man avowedly and unabashedly one-sided. He also seems to tell us not to worry, that he knows what is best for us.

In response, I borrow one of Mr. North's memorable phrases: ``A rat's patootie'' you do!
