Effective this week, The Compass has a new editor.
He's Bryan W. Black, 36, who has been an editor at The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star for 13 years.
For the past three years, Black has supervised the tab desk, the layout and editing desk that produces The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star's community news sections: The Compass, The Virginia Beach Beacon, The Chesapeake Clipper, The Portsmouth Currents, The Suffolk Sun, The Carolina Coast and The Isle of Wight Citizen.
D. Sue Kilpatrick, Compass editor for the past year, has moved into Black's previous position of supervising the tab desk.
Black has a heavy sports background, having spent nine of his 13 years at these newspapers as a layout and copy editor in the sports department. Before coming to The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star in December of 1981, Black was a sports writer and sports copy and layout editor in Raleigh, N.C.; Strasburg, Va.; and Winchester, Va.
Black and his family have lived in the Great Bridge section of Chesapeake for seven years. His wife, Janice, is a Virginia Beach native. They have three sons: Jeremy, almost 10; Andrew, almost 9; and Timothy, who recently turned 5.
When not at work, Black most often can be found on the baseball field, soccer field or basketball court coaching a team on which one of his sons is playing.
