HONORS AND AWARDS

FEST QUEEN, COURT: Rebecca L. Keeling, a senior at Nansemond River High School, has been chosen the 1994 Peanut Fest Queen.

Keeling is a native of northern Suffolk. Her essay on growing up on the James River helped her achieve the honor of serving as queen.

Keeling was chosen from among six area high school seniors and was crowned at the recent annual Peanut Fest Queen's Luncheon, sponsored by Planters Division of Nabisco Food Group and produced by the Pilot Club of Suffolk.

Representing their schools and the community as the Queen's court are Ginny Staylor and Erin Esleeck, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy; Carolyn Griffin and Lia Luisi, Lakeland High School; and Teresa Dryden, Nansemond River High.

GOOBER GANG NAMED: Area high schools and the Peanut Fest Committee have named this year's ``ambassadors'' to the 17th Annual Peanut Fest. The students chosen from the schools will serve as members of the ``Goober Gang'' during the Peanut Fest events today through Sunday at Suffolk's Municipal Airport.

Goober Gang members are chosen by the principals of the schools by merit of their good citizenship, dependability and responsibility.

The students chosen from Lakeland High School are Alisha Hudgins, Paula Johnson, Jennifer Benton, Jeremy Branch, Kevin Copeland, Chauncey Dildy, Christina Reeves and Jennifer Lemasters.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy students are Jill Van Guilder, Allison Williams, Robin Lindner, Mindy Mottley, Sarah Huber and Susannah Broegler. Students chosen from Nansemond River High are Charistina Cain, Kieyetta Lecnic,Kisha Pritchard, Rachel Renely, Teresa Kinner, Erin Hernquint and Waheelah Shabazz.

The Goober Gang, which is sponsored by Sentry Services, will be recognizable at Peanut Fest by their Goober Gang sweatshirts.

DEAN'S LIST: Joseph R. Barco Jr. has been named to the Dean's List for the summer session at the R.B. Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. A senior, Barco is majoring in finance.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barco of Brittany Lane, Suffolk.

DECA OFFICERS: The following students at Nansemond River High School have been chosen to serve as DECA officers for the 1994-95 school year:

Josh Kirk, president; Heather Grant, vice president; Kieste Mayfield, secretary; Josh Varney, treasurer; Greg Price, parliamentarian; Shaheed Rice, historian; and Arnetra Skinner, reporter.

DECA co-advisers are S. Michele Duncan and J.B. Varney.

SCHOOLS RECEIVE GRANTS: Two Suffolk schools have received grants from Union Camp Corp. in Franklin to complete projects during the 1994-95 school year.

At Driver Elementary School, the ``Be Excited About Reading'' program will kick off this month. The BEAR program encourages families to read at home together, and is being sponsored with a $985 grant from Union Camp. For the parent-student teams who complete a certain level of reading projects, a book will be placed in the library in their honor.

At Elephant's Fork Elementary School, Union Camp has granted $1,374 to fund a pilot project called ``Hands-On Geography: Exploring Suffolk.'' Teachers will develop a series of cross-curriculum lessons about Suffolk, and a hands-on desk-top map of the city will be created to help students learn about the city's geography, history, natural resources and people.

This project is in the planning stage, with start-up expected during the second semester for third-graders at both Elephant's Fork and Mount Zion elementary schools.

In the coming years, the map-based project will expand to include all 10 elementary schools and additional grade levels. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
