NO CABLE? THEN NO WHRO

BETTER STOCK UP on Barney tapes: Transmitter problems will keep WHRO, Channel 15, off the public airwaves until around the middle of next week.

The local PBS affiliate can still be seen by cable subscribers, but can't be picked up by those without cable.

The station was knocked off the air at 12:40 a.m. Monday due to problems either with the antenna and/or transmission lines at the transmitter site in Suffolk. According to Keith Massie, vice president of operations for WHRO, the antenna and transmission lines are on a 1,000-foot-tall tower, and special equipment must be shipped in from out of state to repair it.

``Many of the public television programs scheduled to be broadcast while the station remains off the air will be broadcast at a later date,'' said Mary Pruess, WHRO station manager. by CNB
